We are based in Tonbridge and whilst the bulk of our clients are in Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding areas we also have a rapidly expanding client base further afield into London, Kent, Sussex and Surrey. FMJ Associates was set up with the aim of providing an unparalleled level of support to businesses who are looking for a professional firm that will provide proactive support in their development rather than simply reactive 'firefighting'.
Warren Fewtrell, our Managing Director, trained with a two partner firm of Chartered Accountants gaining knowledge of the issues facing numerous businesses in the small and medium sized (SME) marketplace. He left to take up senior roles in various companies and over the years developed a frustration at the lack of proactive and commercial professional support available to owners and managers of SMEs. He states "Spending a number of years 'on the other side of the table' gave me a valuable insight into what SMEs are looking for. There was always too much emphasis on historic and often out of date information. As well as someone to do the accounts and tax work, I needed someone qualified, commercial and personable with whom I could develop a relationship and bounce ideas off. Someone who understood what it was like to be in my position and face the challenges I was facing and offer me some options. Basically I wanted someone who was interested in where my business was going as well as telling me where it had been! I believe that managing a business is like driving a car...looking in the rear view mirror can provide some useful information but it shouldn't be your primary focus of attention!!" As a result, After having taken a year out to study for an MBA at Warwick Business School, Warren founded FMJ Associates to service this need and the practice has gone from strength to strength since then. Whilst initially our focus was on clients in the Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and surrounding areas the practice has expanded considerably and now serves clients in the farthest reaches of London, Kent, Sussex and Surrey.
FMJ's client management team is headed up by another of FMJ's directors, Sue Davies ACMA. Sue, a Chartered Management Accountant with many years' senior level experience within both large and small companies as well as practice, manages the day to day relationships with our clients as well as dealing with all the Practice administration. Her attention to detail and extensive knowledge of accounting software packages contributes directly to the successful delivery of outstanding service to our clients...something we feel very passionate about here at FMJ! |

Our clients tend to be owner managed businesses and therefore our services are geared to support the areas that are of primary concern to that market. They focus on three main subjects:

Business development and control
Working with our clients to put a framework around their development plans, which often relates strongly to various personal objectives, e.g. exiting the business, spending less time in the business, generating more funds for extraction, etc. We then help them put action plans together to help them achieve those objectives.
It is also vitally important that control and reporting mechanisms are in place to regularly highlight how your business is performing in the areas that are critical in achieving your objectives. This management accounting role does not just involve providing monthly profit and loss accounts. It revolves around helping you identify the 'key performance indicators' (KPI), both financial and non financial, putting reliable and sustainable data collection systems in place that ensure that this information is reported to you regularly and in a form that is quickly and easily digested (usually 1 page).
Compliance and keeping more of what you make
As a firm of accountants we obviously look after the normal statutory filings, accounts, tax returns, etc. and as the red tape associated with running a business increases we help to keep our clients on the right side of their obligations. This obviously helps to reduce risk and offers peace of mind.
In addition, a more importantly, we put a great deal of emphasis on helping you keep more of what you make by showing you how you can keep your tax liabilities at a minimum level as well as advising you on the most efficient methods of extracting the profit you've made.

Simple - Always use an accountancy practice that is interested in the same things that you are!
We purposefully have a smaller number of clients that we work very closely with. If we had too many clients that just wanted their year end accounts and tax work done then we would not have the time or resource to work proactively alongside those clients that wanted a more comprehensive service.
Contrary to what you may have experienced in the past, we believe that accountants and business advisers are not a commodity...we're not all the same! We help our clients achieve their goals by putting our experience at their disposal. We emphasise service and quality and achieve this through the development of long term relationships. Regular contact generates the opportunity to become familiar with some of the issues you encounter on a day to day basis.
